Most recently, the program supported a total of 47 BSc, MSc, and PhD scholars from across the world to attend the 5th International Rice Congress. The three-day event was held on 15-17 October 2018, at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore. These scholars played crucial roles at the congress, serving as oral, flash talk, or poster presenters. Each received a USD 1000 travel support, which helped them cover part of the registration and accommodations needed for the event.
During the informal meet-and-greet, Dr. Bas Bouman, Director of RICE CRP, reiterated that "the RICE CRP is both honored and pleased with the students' active participation in IRC2018. It is important that we encourage these inquiring minds to participate in high-level conferences such as the Rice Congress because supporting our future rice experts is also an opportunity for us to invest in the future of rice".
The scholars thanked the IRC team for "the wonderful opportunity and the hospitality", stating that it is an unforgettable experience. “It was a great learning opportunity for us, and we look forward to actively engaging in similar events in the future”, added one of the scholars.
The students, half of whom are female, hailed from South and Southeast Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe.
