Former IRRI trustee is Umali Awards recipient

For his work in helping his country, become rice self-sufficient, Indonesian Sjarifudin Baharsjah has been given the 2013 Dioscoro L. Umali Award in agricultural development. Awarding rites will be held on 16 January 2014 at the New World Hotel in Makati City, Philippines.

Dr. Baharsjah is a former member of the boards of trustees of IRRI and the International Food Policy Research Institute and was once chair of IRRI’s. From 1997 to 2001, he was independent chair of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Council.



Dr. Baharsjah, who is visiting IRRI on 17 January 2014, also helped establish the Center for Agriculture and Socio-Economic Research at the Indonesia Agency for Research and Development. After retirement he co-founded and chaired the Indonesia Rice Foundation/Yayasan Pertanian Mandiri.

He is currently commissioner of PT Duta Karya Mandiri, publisher of the tabloid Sinar Tani, and chair of the advisory board of Yayasan Amal Masyarakat Pertanian Indonesia. Sjarifudin Baharsjah has been awarded the Bintang Mahaputera Adhipradana.

The Umali Award is a collaboration among the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA); the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) of the Philippines; and the Dioscoro L. Umali Foundation (DLUF).
