Empowering research technicians in seed sampling

4-5 July 2024 (Los Banos, Laguna)—The Seed Health and Logistics Unit (SHU) and the Breeding Operations Unit - Cross Cutting Operations (CCO), in partnership with HR - Learning and Development (HRL&D), conducted two transformative training sessions on the Sampling of Seedlots and Consignments for Seed Health Testing. This initiative aimed to empower Research Technicians (RTs) by enhancing their proficiency in performing seed sampling according to the established protocols of SHU and CCO.

The training combined theoretical lectures with engaging hands-on exercises, guiding participants through each process step—from retrieving seeds from cold storage to printing seed packet labels and ultimately drawing seed samples for submission to seed health testing at SHU. RTs also learned to complete necessary records to ensure effective data tracking and traceability.

This workshop was a dynamic learning experience centered on key objectives: understanding the vital role of seed sampling for advanced health testing, identifying homogeneous seed lots ideal for testing, mastering the art of printing seed packet labels, and perfecting the technique of seed sampling with confidence and precision.

The training session brought together 15 enthusiastic candidate Research Technicians (RTs), comprised of 8 males and 7 females, all part of the transformative HR upskilling program for manpower pooling. Joining them were ten dedicated contract workers providing essential backend support and four observant representatives from SHU, the direct users of the final product. The candidates must excel in written and practical assessments to reach the esteemed designation of Authorized Seed Samplers.

A post-training quiz was administered to assess the candidates’ mastery of the protocols discussed during training. An impressive 80% of participants passed their first attempt, and the remaining 20% showcased their determination by retaking and succeeding on their second attempt.

The journey continues with a three-month evaluation period under the guidance of SHU and CCO supervisors. In the last quarter of the year, in partnership with HR, a celebration awaits to honor the RTs who have triumphed in their written and practical evaluations, officially designating them as Authorized Seed Samplers.

The workshop drew on two pivotal documents to guide the process of obtaining seed samples for vital seed health testing: the IRRI-SHU-WI10 Sampling Seedlots and Consignments for Seed Health Testing and the IRRI-CCO-W114 Seed Preparation for ASHT. This approved document for seed sampling focuses exclusively on seed health testing, grounded in the ISTA Rules for Seed Sampling.
