To this end, the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) jointly organized a knowledge-sharing workshop 22-23 May at the BARC Training Complex in Dhaka. The workshop brought together the leaders of many current R4D projects on agricultural production systems, water management, and aquaculture systems operating in the coastal zone (photo). They presented ongoing activities and future plans to improve food and nutritional security of the coastal zone communities. There was an agreement to continue organizing similar knowledge-sharing workshops in the future.
The workshop, which was formally titled, Towards better integration of R4D for improved food production systems in the coastal zone of Bangladesh, was funded by the RICE CRP and Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Collaborative Research on Sustainable Intensification (SIIL).
In addition to the project leaders, participants included prominent agricultural scientists, water management specialists, and agricultural extension professionals from home and abroad. They represented different institutions of the national agricultural research and extension systems, development partners, and NGOs.
Facilitated by Dr. Manoranjan Mondal of IRRI, the technical sessions were presided over by Dr. Mohammod Jalal Uddin, BARC executive chairman; Dr. Wais Kabir, executive director of the Krishi Gobeshona Foundation, Dr. Bhagya Rani Banik, director general of the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute; Dr. Md. Amjad Hossain, director general of the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture; Engr. Amirul Hossain, director of the Bangladesh Water Development Board; and Dr. P.V. Vara Prasad, SIIL director and distinguished professor at Kansas State University.
