AXA Group supports IRRI study on rice production problems caused by climate change

The AXA Group created the AXA Research Fund in 2007 to boost scientific progress and discoveries that contribute to understand and better prepare against environmental, life and socio-economic risks. Currently, AXA is supporting 94 research projects worldwide on natural hazards. One of these projects, a study on comparative genomics and genome assembly of diverse types of rice including cultivated and wild rice, is being conducted at the International Rice Research Institute.

The research, headed by Rod Wing, will develop tools for analyzing 3000 rice genomes to identify new traits that will help accelerate rice breeding programs, and speed up the delivery of improved rice varieties to farmers and consumers throughout the world. The study aims to reduce rice production problems caused by climate change with more resilient, climate-smart varieties, according to Dr. Wing.
