UPLB, IRRI student wins best scientific poster at prestigious Asian genomic congress


Kuala Lumpur ~ Lawrence Uy, a masteral student of the University of the Philippines Los Banos (UPLB) that is advancing his studies at the Genetic Transformation Laboratory of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), received the award for best scientific poster presentation at the 6th Plant Genomics and Gene Editing Congress Asia, held in Malaysia last 29-30 July 2019.

The winning poster, entitled “Gn1a and TGW6 Targeted Knock-Down via Genome Editing Increases Yield Components in Samba Mahsuri’’ featured research on how grain number and grain weight can be significantly improved through targeted knock-down of gene regulators using CRISPR-Cpf1. As the winner, Uy was given the honor of personally presenting the study to congress participants.

Also acknowledged in the award were Uy’s co-authors for the presentation, namely Dr. Yvonne Ludwig, Dr. Merlyn Mendiolo, Dr. Ma. Carmina Manuel, and Dr. Jorge Angeles from UPLB, and Dr. Inez Slamet-Loedin from IRRI.

The congress, organized by event group Global Engage, brings together experts and key stakeholders from around the world to showcase the latest research and cutting-edge technologies in bioinformatics, plant genomics, and gene editing.
